Description
An account of the resource
The purpose of this article is to describe the role of spirituality as a coping mechanism in the lives of parents of children with cancer. This exploratory study was conducted using a dominant-less dominant research design with phenomenology as the guiding theoretical orientation. Twelve parents (eight women and four men) were interviewed. Spirituality was described as playing a key role in the coping repertoire of these parents. In particular, spirituality's influence was described in both a religious and secularized manner with both aspects having a positive influence on coping behaviors among these parents. Health care professionals and nurses in particular have a role to play in facilitating access to spiritual resources as well as acknowledging and accepting the spiritual practices of the families they serve.

Description
An account of the resource
Although prevention of youth suicide is a major aim in most countries, it often is not taken into account that younger children also are capable of killing themselves. Evidence suggests that the suicide rate among children has increased dramatically and that risk factors for suicide must be evaluated when dealing with children in primary and secondary care. Adverse life events in combination with other factors, such as depression, may lead to suicide. This article aims at stimulating further discussion among those involved in pediatric health care. Epidemiological data, an overview of risk factors, and the authors' reflections on the topic are provided.

Description
An account of the resource
The concerns and coping strategies of fathers with chronically ill children and those they perceived as their wives' were identified. In this descriptive study of fathers of chronically ill children seen in three specialty clinics of a pediatric hospital, 48 completed the Hymovich Family Perception Inventory (FPI). Eighty-five percent or more identified seven concerns for themselves and perceived their wives to have seven concerns. Four of the concerns were the same as their own. Four coping strategies were identified as used by more than 85% of the fathers and 3 by their spouses. Two strategies were the same for both groups; all dealt with problem solving and information gathering. Nurses can address fathers' concerns and support them in the use of positive coping strategies, which supports family-centered care.

Description
An account of the resource
The objectives of the study were to evaluate the psychometric properties and appropriateness of instruments for the study of resilience in adolescents. A search was completed using the terms resilience and instruments or scales using the EBSCO database (CINAHL, PreCINAHL, and Academic Search Premier), MEDLINE, PsychINFO and PsychARTICLES, and the Internet. After instruments were identified, a second search was performed for studies reporting the psychometric development of these instruments. Using inclusion and exclusion criteria, six psychometric development of instrument studies were selected for a full review. A data extraction table was used to compare the six instruments. Two of the six instruments (Baruth Protective Factors Inventory [BPFI] and Brief-Resilient Coping Scale) lacked evidence that they were appropriate for administration with the adolescent population due to lack of research applications. Three instruments (Adolescent Resilience Scale [ARS], Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale, and Resilience Scale for Adults) had acceptable credibility but needed further study in adolescents. One instrument (Resilience Scale [RS]) was determined to be the best instrument to study resilience in the adolescent population due to psychometric properties of the instrument and applications in a variety of age groups, including adolescence.Findings of this review indicate that the RS is the most appropriate instrument to study resilience in the adolescent population. While other instruments have potential (e.g., ARS, BPFI) as they were tested in the adolescent and young adult populations, they lack evidence for their use at this time. An evaluation of the review and recommendations are discussed.

Description
An account of the resource
The aims of this article are to summarize the reports from various organizations and existing research applicable to the concept of adolescent consent, and to assemble guidelines to aid in consent decisions for research that focuses on adolescents. The regulations from the United States Department of Health and Human Service and the National Commission for Protection of Human Subjects are reviewed, along with legal, ethical, and research-based issues associated with obtaining consent from adolescents. A set of guidelines has been compiled to provide direction for the appropriate consent process with this special population.
